London:
Despite a rare goal by slumping England striker Michael Owen, Liverpool fell at Birmingham City 2-1 on Sunday as the Reds continued their slide down from the top of the standings. In the day's other match, West Ham defeated West Brom 2-1 on two goals by Trevor Sinclair including the winner in the 67th minute. The match between the two relegation-bound teams left West Ham in 18th place and West Brom one spot below. On Saturday, Arsenal destroyed Manchester City 5-1 and increased its lead to five points as No 2 Manchester United managed only a 1-1 come-from-draw draw against Bolton. On Monday, Fulham faces Tottenham. Birmingham's win - its first after nine league games without a victory - moved it into 16th place, six points clear of the final relegation spot. And it was a perfect gift for manager Steve Bruce on his 20th wedding anniversary. Liverpool stayed in seventh place with 43 points - 17 off the lead. At West Brom, the three points for West Ham were not enough to lift the Hammers out of the three relegation places. The Hammers moved into 18th place with 23 points with West Brom on 21 and Sunderland on 19. On Saturday, defending champion Arsenal destroyed Manchester City 5-1. The victory coupled with Manchester United's come-from-behind 1-1 draw with lowly Bolton gave the Gunners a five-point lead at the top. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored in second-half injury time to save Manchester United. Arsenal has 60 points with Man United on 55. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
