New Delhi:
Salgaocar Sports Club were made to struggle in face of a brave fightback by Indian Navy before the Goan side, relegated from the National Football League, scraped through 3-2 in the Durand Cup in New Delhi on Saturday. R C Prakash (23rd minute), Nigerian Patrick Okonji (51st) and his compatriot Felix Chimaokwiu (87th) were the scorers for Salgaocar, while V S Abhilash (65th) and V Venugopal (75th) were on target for the navymen. In another match, Border Security Force were too strong for the Indian Air Force and ran out 3-1 winners. Harjit Singh struck in the first and 59th minute for BSF, while Gurjit Singh Atwal scored in the eighth. Prasanta Singh got the consolation goal for the airmen in the 87th minute of the match, which also saw BSF's Machhinder Singh getting a red card for violent play. The Salgaocar-Indian Navy match started on an even keel and there was not much to choose between the two sides. Prakash was, however, a constant threat and he got the first opportunity for the Goan outfit in the fifth minute when he ran into the Navy penalty area before shooting straight at goalkeeper S V V Suku. Navy responded five minutes later when a free-kick from distance by P S Sumesh went just over Malagrio Medeira's goal. Okonji wasted a good chance to open the scoring in the 18th minute, when he shot over the bar after the Navy custodian had failed to collect a centre. Francis Fernandes fed the forwards continuously with penetrating crosses and one such effort was missed due to lack of co-ordination between Okonji and Rocus Lamare.
