The women's semi-final line up at Wimbledon features defending champion Maria Sharparova and three others who all have lots to prove. Sharapova's opponent Venus Williams, a two-time Wimbledon champion, is hoping to resurrect her career. Lindsay Davenport is attempting to win her first Grand Slam title in five years, while Amelie Mauresmo is attempting to shake off the tag of best player to have never won a Grand Slam title. Close shave Sharapova maintained her record of not having dropped a set in this Grand Slam. However, the number two seed had a close escape before a trademark cross-court forehand gave her the first set, 7-6. Compatriot and Eighth seed Petrova proved a formidable challenge, but the 18-year-old broke her in the second game of the second set and never looked back. She won 7-6, 6-3 to set up a semi final showdown with Venus Williams. Firing away The 2000 and 2001 champion, Venus Williams came out firing in her quarter final against Mary Pierce. It took her only 21 minutes to win the first set 6-0. Pierce however got her act together in the second set. The 30-year-old, a finalist at last month's French Open fought her way back into the match, with some great ground strokes. But then came a hard-fought tiebreak that went to 22 points, which Williams just managed to cling on to. The American advanced to the semifinal of a Grand Slam for the first time in two years. Anastasia Myskina, playing her first Wimbledon quarterfinal, was up against Amelie Mauresmo. With a 5-1 record against Myskina, the Frenchwoman was soon dominating from the net, breaking Myskina twice in the first set. Playing on her favourite surface, Mauresmo reached her third successive semi final at the All England club with a 6-3, 6-4 win in just over an hour. Top seed Lindsay Davenport had an easy win over US open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova. The resurgent 29-year-old from California beat her compatriot 7-6, 6-3.Topics mentioned in this article
