Houston:
American Brett Quigley and Australian Gavin Coles grabbed a share of the lead after the second round of the Houston Open at the Redstone Golf Club on Friday. Quigley carded a five under par 67 and Coles a 69, as both finished on 10 under par after two rounds. The pair lead by one shot from John Daly, Jeff Maggert, Vijay Singh and Joe Ogilvie. Australian Gavin Coles had a good day, playing himself into a contention. Despite being one of the smallest players on the PGA Tour, Coles turned in a big effort at the Redstone Golf Club to card a three under par 69 and climb to the top of the leaderboard on 10 under alongside American Brett Quigley. Coles birdied three of the last five holes, including a chip-in at the last. Quigley played himself into a share of the lead, thanks to a second consecutive 67, which included seven birdies. The American had made the cut in nine of 10 events this year and finished in a tie for fourth at the Honda Classic. But he's still looking for his first victory since becoming a regular on the tour in 1997, and this could be his best opportunity yet. Impressive shot-making It was a day of impressive shot-making and high drama, with Frenchman Thomas Levet, who had earlier holed out from the bunker, adding to the drama on the eighth hole. Levet attempted to sink a birdie putt from well off the green, but the ball stopped on the lip of the hole. The PGA rule is that once a player is within a reasonable distance from the ball, an official counts to ten, and if the ball then drops into the cup before he reaches ten, then the player is credited with the attempted shot. Levet could be seen counting, one finger at a time, waiting and hoping that the ball would fall for a birdie. The ball did indeed drop into the cup, but after the ten seconds, so it was ruled a par. Perhaps the shot of the day came from the iron of Jose Coceres, whose approach shot on the 17th hole bounced a couple of times, before nestling in the cup. But, the great shot failed to prevent Coceres from missing the cut. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
