Ajinkya Rahane, a right-handed top-order batsman from Mumbai is a perfect combination of talent, consistency and aggression. He made his first-class debut for Mumbai in 2007. In only his second Ranji season, he piled up a mountain of 1089 runs, which was instrumental in Mumbai's 38th Ranji title. He is one of the few players to have scored 1000 runs in a single Ranji season. Having represented Mumbai at all levels, Rahane was always seen as a bright prospect for Mumbai cricket. He has also represented the Indian Under-19s, along with India A, India Blue and Green in the Challenger series, as well as West Zone in the Duleep Trophy.

Rahane was part of the Mumbai Indians camp for the first few seasons of Indian T20 league and in 2011; he was signed by the Rajasthan Royals. Later that year, he was called up to India's ODI squad for the series against England in place of injured Virender Sehwag, thanks to his performances in the Emerging Players tournament, where he impressed with two centuries. Rahane made his T20I debut against England and announced himself with a terrific 61 off just 39 balls, which was also his first half-century of his career. He went on to make his ODI debut against the same opposition and came across as a batsman in blazing form. In only the second match of his career, Rahane shone with a maiden fifty. He made his Test debut against Australia at Delhi but managed to score just 8 runs in two innings. Later on after Sachin Tendulkar's retirement, he was the obvious choice in the middle order. Rahane showed his range of shots and temperament in India's tour of South Africa in 2013-14 when he scored 209 runs in the 2 Test series. He continued his good form scoring his maiden Test century against New Zealand at Wellington. He was most certainly retained by Rajasthan for 7th season.
