With a loss by an innings and 242 runs to England on Saturday, India have been comprehensively downed by their hosts in all the three Test matches played so far. The recent defeat though, also features as one of the heaviest losses inflicted on the team ever.
India's biggest defeat came at the hands of the West Indies, as far back as in 1958. The margin of an innings and 336 runs meant a humiliating loss for the hosts at Kolkata. West Indies managed to wrap the 5-Test series, 3-0 in their favour with each of their other two wins being almost as merciless (203 at Kanpur and 295 at Chennai).
England, in 1974, had also damaged the India's cricketing morale by inflicting a loss by an innings and 285 runs, at the Lord's. A century each by Dennis Amiss and Mike Denness was followed by a relentless bowling attack in the second innings of the match. Result: India all out for 42.
Sri Lanka and Australia are the other two teams who have made India submit by a huge margin. Though Australia's win by an innings and 226 runs at Brisbane came in 1947, a time when Indian cricket was still in its formative years, Sri Lanka managed to enjoy an innings and 239-run win in 2008 at home against India under Anil Kumble. Jehan Mubarak's side took the series 2-1, despite a brief fightback.
