With 12 runs to get in the final over, skipper Darren Sammy planted two huge consecutive sixes off James Faulkner to register his side's second win of the tournament.
In a big chase (of 179), West Indies needed their talismanic opener Chris Gayle to fire. And he did just that! Gayle smashed a fifty and finished with 53 from 35 balls.
Gayle had the company of Lendl Simmons in the middle overs. Simmons scored 26 before being dismissed by Doug Bollinger.
With Dwayne Bravo (27) for company, Sammy smashed 19 runs off the penultimate over from Mitchell Starc and finished the game with two big sixes in the final over.
Earlier, it was down to Glenn Maxwell to pull Australia out of trouble again. He raced away to 45 off 22 balls and threw his wicket away just when he started to get his eye in for another massive knock.
The slow wicket at Mirpur continued to assist the spinners. Samuel Badree finished with figures of 2/37
