These are the Top 10 comments we received on the controversy over how much money was offered as a reward to the Indian hockey team after it won the Asian Champions Trophy, defeating Pakistan 4-2 in the shoot-out in the final. (please note some comments have been shortened)
The question we asked - After the Indian hockey team rejected a paltry sum as prize money, the government has said that each player will in fact get Rs 1.5 lakh each. Is that too little, too late?
By Amit Tibrewal: This just goes to show the step-motherly treatment being meted out to sports other than cricket in our country by our administrators. While the amount need not necessarily be the same as what the cricketers get, the announcement should have been spontaneous and not after the outrage that took place when the paltry sum of Rs 25,000/- that was announced.
By Ravi Shriyan: It is proud moment that India is the Asian champ. Hockey has always been given a step motherly treatment. Being our national sports government has never done or showed any interest to bring up this sport which has been India pride before India independence or after. It is fortunate that their is still some interest among the youth for this sport and would want to bring up the sports. Wishing all the members of this winning team all the best and again to bring the pride back to our country by winning the World cup and Olympics. special blessings to our Mumbai hero Mr.Valmiki
By Kaushik: It clearly shows govts. unwillingness towards well being of the players who brought glory to our country. Hockey being not as profitable for the govt as cricket they dont want to invest here despite it being our national game. Another shameful act was rewarding with 25k which is like insulting the players. even an amount of 1.5lkhs is very small when compared with 2 crore given to cricket players. Clearly discouraging the young to play hockey.
By Rajesh: We should stop criticizing board and govt. regarding this issue. Its mistake of all of us no one of us is interested in this national game, no one know hockey game is going on also. first we should change our self by encouraging game
By LDS: Kudos to our hockey players who are really playing for the love of the game. Congratulations to them. As for the treatment meted to them by the government, the lesser said the better. A wake up call for the industry to sponsor this game?
By Vikas: It is not a new thing. there has always been bias in perception from the public, media and the government towards cricket as compared to national game which is hockey. Can you really tell the names of all the players of hockey team? I bet not even half names will come to your mind.
By HGKETKAR: The player's rejection to govt's declaration may be taken sportingly and in a positive manner. Wining the first Asean Champion's trophy is really glorious achievement, and that is also by a newly formed team which misses many senior players, is not an ordinary achievement. During the tournament they beat South Korea, China and Pakistan is really a great achievement and this is the first International trophy in last FOUR years. So the Govt should think it in a different way.
By Sabiha: Even Rs 1.5 Lakh is an insult. Just imagine a National Level Hockey player's mother does not have money to cook food for her star son. Isn't it pathetic. They should be rewarded at least 10 Lakh each. Its pity that corrupt politician eat with gold plate whereas our national level players do not have money to eat. I am proud of our Hockey team for winning and even more proud for rejecting Rs 25 Thousand offered by Govt.
By Amit: First of all "Congrats to Indian Hokey Team". Great achievement !!! Yes it was shame that they were offered 25k each for the grand victory. How come the indian cricket players did get cash in crores from BCCI followed by some state govts? Indian govt and state govts should declare some eye catching prize for them. It will also encourage them to play better in future.
By Arun kumar: Yes, they have never given equal importance in comparing to our cricket team. Our government should do something on equality of all sport people. Mostly Hockey players are from very poor background, at-least give them houses and monthly better pay for them.
