New Delhi:
The international hockey federation (FIH) today disapproved the decision of the German hockey association (Deutscher Hockey Bund - DHB) to field a development team at the Champions Trophy men's field hockey tournament, to be held in Amstelveen, the Netherlands, from August 16 to 24. "The denied opportunity to watch the current World Champions in action amongst the world's six best teams at FIH's premier annual event is a disappointment for the players, spectators, the organisers, television viewers, broadcasters and sponsors," Peter Cohen, Honorary Secretary General of the FIH, said in a statement today. The game's world governing body, however, stopped short of imposing any sanction on DHB. "At this stage we have done everything that is reasonable to persuade DHB to reconsider," Cohen said. The FIH said that DHB was not prepared to reverse its decision despite a strong appeal from the organisers, ignoring the responsibility of being the World Champions and causing embarrassment to the authorities.
