The Champions Challenge Hockey tournament in South Africa featured the teams that have not qualified for the elite six-nations Champions Trophy. The final on Sunday was a contest between Europe and Asia (Spain vs South Korea), with the winner earning the right to play in the next Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Spain's Juan Escarre opened the scoring with a penalty shot in just the third minute. Two more goals came in quick succession, giving Spain a convincing lead of 3-0 within the first 15 minutes. South Korea pulled back one goal in the 20th minute, with Lee Jung Seon converting from a short corner. But that was the only goal his team would manage till half time. The second half was a repeat of the first, Spain killing off any chance that the Koreans might have had. Eduard Tubau scored the fourth and fifth goals for Spain, completing his hat-trick. Xavi Ribas converted from a penalty corner to make it 6-1, once again the Spaniards scoring three goals within 15 minutes. The South Koreans fought back by scoring a goal in the 62nd minute. But Spain extended their lead, scoring a seventh goal. Still fighting, the Koreans grabbed another opportunity to make it 7-3, but the score stayed that way till the final whistle. Spain's win moves them up to seventh place in the world rankings. The win also qualifies them for a place in the 2004 Champions Trophy in Lahore.Topics mentioned in this article
