India continued their good performance in hockey as Jugraj Singh scored a last minute equaliser to snatch a 2-2 draw for India against Germany in Duisberg. Gagan Ajit Singh gave India the lead in the fourth minute of the game and the visitors were ahead till half time. But Germany scored through Reneat and Kunst in the second half to forge ahead. Jugraj Singh converted a penalty corner in the dying seconds to get the equaliser for India. India now move to Hamburg to participate in a four-nation tournament against Germany, Spain and Argentina – and all the squads are in the decisive phase of qualifying for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Germany and Spain will again compete against each other in September in Barcalona at the European Nations Cup, where only the new titleholder will qualify for Athens. Argentina will try to obtain the Olympic ticket at the Pan American Games beginning of August in the Dominican Republic. The only chance former Olympic gold medallists India have to qualify for the Olympic Games is the qualification tournament in beginning of March 2004 in Madrid. The reason: In the final of the Asian Games 2002, Korea beat India 4-3 and took away the qualification. The hockey-audience in Hamburg will definitely see four top-teams. Each of them has a realistic chance of winning a medal in Athens. (With PTI inputs)
