Srinagar:With the Spring Swing Golf Championship the golfing season has commenced in Kashmir and this year the government is focusing on attracting more golfers to the state in an effort to rope in more moolah for the tourism industry.
The Royal Springs Golf Course in the foothills of the Zabarwan mountains is one of the most beautiful golf courses in the country and most golfers relish the prospect of teeing off here.
"Playing golf in summer is something very different than playing in winter. In winter (the) course is heavy while in summer it is open," said Bupinder Singh, golfer.
"I have played in Delhi, Chandigarh and Mumbai. I feel this is one of the best golf courses in Asia. And course is also well maintained," Singh added.
The government is promoting golf in a big way to boost the tourism industry that has been badly hit by 17 years of violence. And the Royal Springs Golf Course is becoming golfing paradise.
"Golf has very good potential. We hope we will utilize it fully. We hope more tourists come here because golfers are high spending tourists. That is why we want to focus more on it," said Farooq Shah, Secretary, Golf Course.
The Spring Swing Golf Championship is the first tournament of the season.
With more and more tournaments being organised at Royal Springs, the government hopes this will bring an increasing number of tourists to Kashmir, especially golfers from across the world.
