When he left Heathrow airport a week ago with his European Ryder Cup team, captain Bernhard Langer vowed to return with the 19-inch-high Ryder Cup trophy. Langer kept his word on Monday, stepping off a flight from Detroit with golf's most prestigious team trophy in his hand and with 10 of his victorious 12-man team keeping him company. Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson presented the team with complimentary champagne before Langer, Colin Montgomerie, Lee Westwood and Paul McGinley discussed the team's crushing 18.5-9.5 landslide points victory at the 35th Ryder Cup in Oakland Hills in Michigan. Good spirits Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington remained in Detroit but the rest of the team were in good spirits after a night of partying on American soil before flying back home after the Atlantic. "Yeah, I think it still needs to sink in but, you know, we left here a week ago. We took the cup and went over to Detroit to try and defend it. We didn't just defend it. We had an astonishing, overwhelming victory. I believe it has been the largest margin of victory for a long, long time, if not ever. I have been so proud of these 12 players, a couple of them are not here so I have to say 10 players, right now but I am proud of all of the 12. "They did an incredible job. We couldn't have dreamed of a better outcome than what happened. We beat them every single day. That just shows how strong this team is and I'm excited for these guys individually and I'm excited for our (European) Tour and for everybody involved with us," said Langer. (AP)
