While the lions' share of golf fans were witnessing the USA's defeat to Europe in the Ryder Cup, the PGA Tour Valero Texas Open was heading towards its conclusion at the La Cantera Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas. At the eighth hole, Patrick Sheehan hit an approach shot that landed just inches from the cup and set up a birdie that saw him move to 15-under-par. Then JL Lewis hit his approach shot at the 16th hole to within a foot and moved to 13-under-par with the resulting birdie. Second-round leader, Dean Wilson, rebounded from Saturday's 70 and shot a four-under-par 66 to finish tied for third place with Todd Fischer. His birdie putt at the ninth hole helped him move to 15-under and into a tie for third. Two-times Texas Open winner Justin Leonard was amongst four players at 12-under-par after he finished with a birdie putt at the 18th hole. At the par-four 11th, leader Bart Bryant drove into the rough, but made a 30 foot putt for birdie and moved to 18-under. Sheehan was within striking distance of Bryant for most of the back nine. Trailing by two at the 14th hole, his eagle putt would have taken him into a tie for the lead, but he had to settle for a birdie and was at 17-under - one stroke off the pace. Bryant also had an eagle opportunity at the 14th, but made birdie and reclaimed his two stroke lead. He went on to miss a birdie putt at the 18th, but a par would be more than enough to complete the victory. Bryant, who has qualified through the PGA Tour Qualifying School on five occasions, earned $630 thousand US dollars and a two-year PGA Tour exemption. (AP)
