Conditions could not have been better for an all out assault on the Hilversumsche golf club course on day one of the KLM Open. Martin Lafeber made a solid start to the defence of his title, shooting a respectable opening round of even par 70, the highlight of which was this approach to the eighth hole. The home town hero playing well considering he is carrying a wrist injury. Ian Poulter came south of Amsterdam to try and secure valuable points in his charge toward a place in the Ryder Cup team. The Englishman shot a 67 which included a brilliant birdie at the par three 15th hole. Paul McGinley is another trying to make the team to play at Oakland hills. The Irishman's round got going at the 16th with a long birdie putt. When he got to the 18th, he had the chance to open his Dutch campaign with a round of 65, and again he rolled the putt in to cap an impressive start. McGinley's round of 65 was matched by Australian Richard Green who is enjoying the best season of his career. He showed the ability to hit a laser straight iron at the 17th hole, the left hander almost holing out for an eagle 2, but more than happy with a tap in for birdie. Englishman Andrew Raitt is one shot better off. He had the chance to share the lead but missed an eagle putt at the 18th, and settled for a round of six under par 64. The field are chasing David Lynn who is looking to become the eleventh first time winner on the European tour this season. He helped his cause with an eagle at the 12th. Added to that were six birdies, one of which was set up by a brilliant approach to the tough par three 15th hole. A 63 makes Lynn the man to catch on day two. (AP)
