New Delhi:Indian golf has had fair bit of success in terms of players making it big both at home and abroad. But in order to take the game to the next level, there is a need to establish a uniform teaching system throughout the country so that aspiring golfers get quality assistance to move ahead and become world class players. It is with this intent that the Indian Golf Union and the Professional Golfers Association of India announced the setting up of a National Golf Academy. Uniform teaching system Led by well-known golf coach Donato Di Ponziano, the aim of the project is to establish a uniform teaching system in the country. "We will teach them every aspect of the game, including psychology, anatomy, biomechanic as well as physical training," said Ponziano. The first step in that direction is the classification of existing teaching professionals and the first such programme has been scheduled from July 6-11 at the Eagleton Golf Club, Bangalore. The coaching programme for teaching professionals is being funded by the Royal and Ancient Golf club of St Andrews, which has been funding similar programmes for the past five years. No proper structure "Those of us who've been teaching feel that there is no proper structure and no system as far as teaching golf is concerned," said former golfer Nonita Lal Qureshi. "We know that countries, which have been successful, have a very strong teaching base," she added. While the Indian National Golf Academy will be in place by the year 2006, all golf clubs affiliated to IGU have been asked to ensure that their teaching professionals attend one of the two courses this year and obtain their licences because henceforth, only licenced professionals will be allowed to teach in their clubs.
