Conditions were overcast in Valderrama on Friday as the second round of the Volvo Masters got underway. The main topic of conversation was still who would win the European Order of Merit title, with Colin Montgomerie and Michael Campbell the only two men in contention. New Zealander Campbell was out early after his round of 73 on Thursday. This eagle attempt at the 17th was missed as Campbell went on for a 69. Better than the opening round but maybe not enough to catch up with his rival Montgomerie. Campbell lies joint eleventh, at one under following two rounds. Also on the 17th, Jose Maria Olazabal provided the shot of the day. Before this shot it had been a frustrating day for the Spaniard but this eagle three at least brought a smile to his face and he ended the day at two under, joint seventh. Defending champion and joint overnight leader Ian Poulter did not fare so well on Friday compared to his opening round. This birdie at the 10th however helped him to a round of 68, and seven under overall, tied for second place. The man joining him on seven under was Sergio Garcia. He also birdied the tenth for a round of 67. However, the day really belonged to Colin Montgomerie. The Scotsman maintained the great form he had shown in the opening round right from the very first hole, achieving a birdie three here. At the 8th, he almost holed with his second shot, coming close exactly how he had on Thursday. He still managed a birdie three however. At the 15th he scrambled to save his par and achieved it with a great putt, finishing with a 66 and a leading score of nine under. That gives him a massive eight shot advantage over Campbell and as long as Montgomerie can maintain his form, the Scotsman looks on course for yet another European Order of Merit title. (AP)
