Gurgaon: Simi Mehra is truly a pioneer for ladies golf in India. She is the first and only Indian woman professional who has played on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour. When Simi turned professional in 1994, many thought that it was unwise decision. However, Simi with her 300 yard drives was ready to take on the best. Her best finish on the LPGA tour was fourth at the British Open and the Australian Masters. Ready to get back Then came a slight dip in form and now a one year medical break on account of a wrist injury. But the 33-year-old is ready to take on the Annika Soresntam's and the Michelle Wie's as soon as she gets back. For the moment Simi will be seen in action in Delhi later this month as the Women's Golf Association of India (WGAI) launches its pro tour with a skins event at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon. The $18,000 event will feature four LPGA players from the United States. Harsh comments The Kolkata girl is known for her hard hitting drives and her comments. So much so that her home course, the Royal Calcutta Golf Club, (RCGC) had once banned her. "I was banned from the RCGC because of some constructive criticsim but then I was made an honorary member of the RCGC next year," she adds. Now Simi is out to change the perception that women golfers in India can't make it at the highest level.
