Las Vegas:
Crystal clear skies greeted golfers at the final round of the Michelin Championship on Sunday. Ted Purdy, the leader after the third round, added to his lead with a chip-in eagle on the ninth hole but his day would not end in triumph. Shigeki Maruyama was near the top of the leaderboard after he birdied the 13th hole. He went on to finish his round with a 68 and would tie for sixth. John Daly finished with a 68 as well. He could have done better but he missed several birdie putts including another short one on 18. Off the green Jim Furyk took the lead for the first time in the tournament when he chipped in from off the green for an eagle on the par-five 16th. But then Purdy, who had fallen two shots behind Furyk, reduced the lead to one before his tee shot at the 17th hit a sprinkler head on the bank next to the green and bounced into the water. He finished with a triple bogey. Furyk, attempting to win here in Las Vegas for a fourth time after victories in 1995, 1998 and 1999, then three-putted the 18th for a bogey in regulation, giving Short Jr. a chance to catch him. Short Jr. then forced a play-off with Furyk by rolling in a nine-foot (2.7-metre) birdie putt on the final hole of regulation. Both parred the first extra hole. Then Furyk, who has won only one of six play-offs in his tour career, pulled his tee shot on the par-three 17th into the water. The drop left Furyk a stroke behind Short, who holed an easy par putt for a memorable victory. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
