Estoril: Englishman Paul Broadhurst is celebrating his first title in 10 years following a dramatic ending to the Portuguese Open on Sunday. Paul Lawrie and Barry Lane looked most likely to lift this title as the fourth round progressed at the Oitavos Golf Club in Estoril. Overnight leader Lawrie was in consistent form, an eagle at the 13th improving his chances even more. But at the 17th, all that changed. Messy play Lawrie was one shot clear, along with Barry Lane when both drove into the trees. The Scotsman made a complete mess of the hole, finishing with a triple-bogey seven. Lane faired not much better, taking a bogey five. Yet earlier in the round, the situation had looked so good for the Englishman. He produced three birdies on the front nine and, in fact, heading to the 18th he needed only par to snatch the title from Lawrie. Broadhurst meanwhile was now in the clubhouse. Anxious wait Leader at the halfway stage, the Englishman had hovered in the leading group, but then bogeyed the final hole after driving into a bush to the left of the fairway. He entered the clubhouse on 13-under, anxiously awaiting the fate of Lawrie and Lane. He need not have worried though. If the 17th had been a bit of a mess for Lane, then the final hole was a complete and utter disaster. He crashed to a quintuple-bogey nine after also driving into a bush. That left Lawrie with the chance to take the title. He needed a 12-foot birdie putt to force a play-off but left it short. That left Broadhurst as the winner - his first title in 10 years. The Englishman's 13-under-par total of 271 was one ahead of Lawrie, with Portugal's Jose-Filipe Lima in third. Meanwhile, Lane was left to settle for a share of fifth on eight-under-par and reflect on what might have been. (AP)
