San Antonio:

Robert Gamez set a PGA Tour record as he won the Texas Open by three shots over Olin Browne on Sunday. It was a hot day at the Resort Course at La Cantera Golf Club in San Antonio for the final round of the Texas Open. The course is located next to a roller coaster called 'The Rattler'. Browne experienced far more highs than lows over the four rounds. He stayed close to Gamez, with a birdie on the 12th hole to lower his score to 14-under par. Superb round Browne, a winner two weeks ago at the Deutsche Bank Championship, had a superb final round 6-under-par 64 to finish at 15-under for the tournament. It was good enough to take second place, three strokes behind Gamez. Gamez was calm throughout, even though he was chasing his first tournament victory in more than 15-years. He birdied the 11th hole to take the outright lead at 16-under par. He remained steady on the greens, and another birdie at the 13th hole gave him a two shot lead at 17-under par. Gaining advantage One hole later, Gamez missed a short eagle putt, but tapped in for birdie which gave him a 3-shot advantage. Woody Austin finished in a tie for third place with Mark Wilson, at 14-under par. Austin capped a closing round 69 with a birdie at the 18th. Gamez took a 3-shot lead to the 18th hole, where he just missed a putt for birdie. He tapped in for par to complete a final round 6-under-par 64, earning him a place in the record books. The 37-year-old Gamez won for the first time in 394 events, dating back to the 1990 Bay Hill Invitational, a stretch of 15 years, 6 months. He surpassed Butch Baird's record of 15 years, 5 months and 10 days between wins. (AP)
