Britain's Justin Rose made five birdies from inside three feet, then capped off his first round with a 15-foot eagle from the fringe for an 8-under 63 on Friday in the Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton, Massachussetts. The 23-year old Rose holds a two-stroke lead. It was his career best round. Rose is seeking his first ever PGA Tour victory. But little known Garrett Willis had, arguably, the shot of the day. At number 11, the American lined up his putt, with his back almost facing the hole. Then he putt was on its way, a long, slow, winding putt that amazingly found the cup. The birdie took him to 3-under. Willis carded a 66 on the day. Justin Rosea€™s tee shot on the 18th hole landed just on the edge of the green. Rose then sank an eagle putt that got him to 8-under par. Twice British Open champion Greg Norman showed flashes of his glory days when he landed a 30-foot birdie on number-4. That lengthy birdie lifted the Australian to 3-under par, five back of the leader, Rose. Tom Pernice also showed fine form on the 13th green. His ball was just on the fringe, when he chipped in for a birdie try. The ball had just enough speed to reach the cup. That marvelous shot got Pernice to plus-3 on the day. American veteran Briny Baird did his best to stay with the leaders. His par putt on number-16 kept him at even par, possibly within striking distance for the tournament, which actually finishes on Monday, which is a holiday, Labor Day, in the USA.
