Santo da Serra: Sweden's Jarmo Sandelin overcame swirling and gusting winds to shoot a bogey-free, 6-under-par 66 and open a two-stroke lead in the Madeira Island Open on Thursday. The five-time European tour winner, who last captured a title four years ago in the BMW Asian Open, spaced out six birdies. These included three straight on Nos 6-8 over the 6,826-yard hilltop Santo da Serra course on Portugal's Atlantic islands. Five players were next at 68, led by Sandelin's compatriot Fredrik Henge, who eagled the 572-yard par-5 11th but gave the strokes back five holes later with a double bogey. Also two strokes behind were England's Gary Emerson, Irishman Damien McGrane, Garry Houston of Wales and Scotsman Paul Lawrie. England's Mark Foster and Ireland's Gary Murphy, both of whom also eagled No. 11, led a group of nine another stroke back at 69 including Frenchman Jean van de Velde. (AP)
