New Delhi: Twelve-year-old Rashid Khan is the current national sub junior champion and he works as a caddy at the Delhi Golf Club. Rashid is a product of the Club's annual Junior Training Programme, which also includes an initiative to help the children of its caddies and staff members. Young golfers like Rashid have benefited from the free clinics, free playing facilities and sponsored kits on offer for under privileged children. "I want to go ahead till the US Open and the Augusta Masters...my favourite player is Sergio Garcia," said Khan. The Junior Training Programme, now in its 20th year, draws a huge response. Though the entry has now been restricted to 220 children in 4 classes based on proficiency. There are lessons on golf as also sessions on rules, etiquette, nutrition and meditation for children up to 17 years of age. "There is a definite, genuine interest in the game. The juniors are actually liking and identifying golf not as a game but as a sport," said coach Romit Bose with the junior training programme. And with golf gaining ground as a viable profession in India, often its the parents pushing their kids towards the game.
