New York:

Tiger Woods makes his return to professional golf this week at the US Open in Mamaroneck, New York. The world's number one player was last seen at the US Masters, some 10 weeks ago, and hasn't played in a tournament since the death of his father, Earl Woods. Tiger Woods and his father Earl had an extraordinarily close relationship that revolved around, but was hardly limited, to the game of golf. Woods said on Tuesday that going back to golf after his father's death was difficult because Earl Woods and the game of golf were synonymous in so many ways. "Well I took quite a bit of time off. I really had no desire to get back to the game of golf. I think one of the hardest things for me, in all honesty, was to get back to the game of golf. Because a lot of my memories, my great memories that I have with my Dad, are at the golf course," he said. "You know anytime when you take some time off and you come back you always work on your fundamentals right? Your grip, your posture, your stance, your alignment, well that's what I learned from Dad. So from that standpoint it was certainly a little more difficult than I had expected. "But also then again it brought back so many great memories. And every time I thought back I always had a smile on my face. And as I was grinding and getting ready it was also one of the great times too - thinking back on all the lessons and the life lessons dad taught me through the game of golf. I mean all these things come rushing back at you," Woods added. Woods said he took time to return to the game because he wouldn't play until he was ready to win. "I'm there to compete. I'm here to win the tournament and all of my energy is going towards that. We've gone through a lot already," he said. Tiger will tee off Thursday afternoon with defending champion Michael Campbell and 2005 U.S. Amateur champion Eduardo Molinari. (AP)
