Gotemba, Japan:
Scotland, Sweden and Canada were locked in a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the World Golf Championships-EMC2 World Cup at The Taiheiyo Club, Gotemba, Japan. The three teams all shot 10 under par 62's in the opening day fourball better-ball format. The formidable US team were nowhere in the picture on day one. The Swedes finished at 10 under par. Robert Karlsson ended with an eagle on the 18th, his second of the day. Dean Robertson and Andrew Coltart of Scotland were also at the top of the leaderbaord. Robertson had a nice chip right next to the pin on the 17th. They were also at 10 under par. And a three-way tie would emerge after Canada's Mike Weir and Ian Leggatt also shot a 62. Leggatt's great approach on the 16th set up one of his four birdies while Weir had three. Spain are also in contention. Sergio Garcia had a nice putt from the apron. He and Miguel Angel Jimenez shot a combined nine under par. New Zealand would also end on 9 under after Michael Campbell's chip on the 18th almost got him an eagle that could have made it a four way tie at the top. The disappointment of the defending champions USA was obvious when their 6 under par 66 only got them to 11th place.Topics mentioned in this article
