New Delhi:
You win your first tournament as a professional but you still end up with just four career titles. That's a sad start for anyone, but Delhi-based golfer Vivek Bhandari is not affected by that figure. After a brilliant return from injury with a title and two second place finishes, Vivek feels he still has it in him to change all that. The last big prize Bhandari won was in 1997 at the Honda Siel Open. Since then it's been a downhill slide for the golfer. He failed to win any tournament after that, with his best performance being a second place finish behind Vijay Kumar at the SRF Open in Delhi. And then it was not just his form, but injury that set him behind as well. But some practice and Yoga seemed to have done wonders. "After my injury last year, where I had lost complete movement in my neck and lost sensation in my left arm, I look at life in a different prospective, as an opportunity to do something," said Vivek. And it seems to have paid off. Vivek won his first tournament in four years at the Hero Honda Open in Bangalore in August this year. And then went on to have two second place finishes on the Asian PGA tour. "I am pleasantly surprised. I had no great expectations. I had been working hard and had no visions of making an impact the way I did. But I knew I was playing well and that if I put it all together I would have a few good finishes. But two seconds in a span of three weeks is pretty incredible for me," remarked the comeback golfer. Vivek had a sensational start as an amateur golfer. He won as many as four titles in 1990 and finished second at the Singapore Amateur Open as well. After that he left for the US on a golf scholarship in 1991, before returning and turning professional in 1994. But as a professional Vivek hasn't had that kind of success just yet, winning just four tournaments in seven years. "I can't see any reason why I can't win. I have had two seconds and I've lost both by one shot and the way I look at it, if I can improve by just a little, not much, I think I can win a tournament in the Asian PGA," he said.Topics mentioned in this article
