Montreal: Three weeks ago when US Ryder Cup captain Curtis Strange named Scott Verplank as his rookie pick there were many who questioned his judgement. But Verplank more than justified that decision at the Canadian Open. Bob Estes, who was overnight on 9 under, had a brilliant chip for birdie on the par 3, 12th, to move to 11 under, and finished at that score in the second place. Joey Sindelar joined Estes in second place thanks to his birdie putt on the 17th hole. Overnight leader Scott Verplank played cautiously hitting an approach shot on the 15th hole, 30 feet from the pin. But the caution seemed justified because his putter was working and he made the long birdie putt to increase his lead to three shots at 15 under par. And the American's putter was red hot because he made a 25-foot par putt on the 18th to finish at 14 under for a three shot win. It was his fourth career title. Verplank's 14 under was the same score by which Tiger Woods had won this event last year. But this time the world number one was nowhere close, as he finished ten shots behind Verplank and tied for the 23rd place. Woods obviously doesn't play his best in Canada. Four years ago he missed his only cut as a professional at this tournament.
