New Delhi: For Dehradun-born Monisha Kaltenborn - principal of Team Sauber, the connect with India is deep and it is great to return for the second edition of the Indian Grand Prix.
Speaking about her Indian origins to NDTV on Friday, Formula One's first woman boss said that she is proud to have an Indian connect. "I have spent lovely times here. I have spent great moments with my grandparents, friends and family. And that is part of my life. This is what I would like to tell my children and I hope that I can show them more of India."
The 42-year-old has a stake in the F1 team as well and she says her role as the team principle of Sauber Formula One team is all about being responsible towards the three hundred employees working under her. "I am not so powerful to start with and I also don't think it is about power. It's, for me, mainly about responsibility. First of all, to our three hundred employees which is not a small amount. The power games I leave to others."
Hoping for her personal links with the country to work in her team's favour, Kaltenborn said that there is an urge to do better come Sunday's race. "Personal links make a big difference. It is like when Kamui (Kobayashi) went to Japan, he somehow found something which made him show an excellent performance with a podium finish."
It is also not just about the Indian Grand Prix for her. Kaltenborn says that it is key for Formula One success here that local Indian drivers because 'that is what fans can equate to straightaway and create a link. This will help the sport establish itself in India.'
"We at Sauber however do not go out scouting for drivers. We until now, have been in a fortunate position that drivers come to us," she said.
This co-owner of Sauber though also has an unknowing eye on fashion with her Wellington boots during a grand prix creating quite a buzz. "That is a very funny story. In Silverstone, we were to walk through mud to get to a plane and I thought I am not doing this again. So, I picked up these boots without thinking much. People saw them and the boots became very important," she said adding that other team owners liked her boots and that people called in at a TV station asking about them.
