Barcelona: Italy's Vitantonio Liuzzi has been given the final seat for the forthcoming Formula One season after being named as the Hispania Racing team's second driver on Wednesday.

Liuzzi will partner Indian Narain Karthikeyan in the second F1 season of the cash-strapped Spanish stable after being dumped in December by Force India with a year left on his contract.

"I am really happy to have signed this agreement with Hispania Racing," said 29-year-old Liuzzi, who will take part in his sixth season.

"I never lost hope to be in Formula One as I know I have the experience and the right attributes for a young and ambitious team.

"I face a new challenge now and this excites me. I also face a lot of hard work in guiding Hispania Racing through the development of our new car."

Liuzzi was the reserve driver with Red Bull in 2005 and replaced Christian Klien for three races before joining Toro Rosso for two seasons.

He was the third driver at Force India in 2008, filling in following the departure of Giancarlo Fisichella for Ferrari end 2009.

Hispania's latest challenger, the F111, will be unveiled on Friday and have two days of testing at this week's final session at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya before the season-opening grand prix in Australia

Team principal Colin Kolles was in charge of Force India when Liuzzi was test driver in 2009.

"I have known Tonio for many years as he raced with me in lower categories," said Kolles.

"He is a very professional driver who will bring a lot of benefits to the team. I am convinced about his skills to develop a car and his speed.

"He has shown this in the past, having contributed to a large extent in developing and moving a back-of-the-grid car to the front."

The 2011 season starts with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 27.
