London:
Bent scored in the 24th minute at White Hart Lane. Obafemi Martins missed a chance to equalize for Newcastle in the 87th.
Tottenham stays in ninth place in the league and Newcastle is next-to-last, four points away from safety. Manager Alan Shearer, one of Newcastle's most popular strikers, has yet to win in three games since taking over and now has only five more games to rescue the Magpies.
Manchester City beat last-place West Bromwich Albion 4-2 to climb two places to 10th. Robinho scored his first league goal in 12 games.
The highlight of the day was the FA Cup semifinal match at Wembley, with Manchester United taking on Everton for the right to face Chelsea in the final. Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-1 Saturday.
The move that led to Bent's goal at White Hart Lane started with a throw out by Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes. The ball was quickly played upfield and, when Newcastle defender Sebastien Bassong intercepted a pass by Luka Modric, the ball ran to Bent. The striker's first, angled shot was blocked by goalkeeper Steve Harper but he put in the rebound.
Tottenham lost Michael Dawson in the 33rd when the center back was carried off with an ankle injury.
Shearer sent on Alan Smith for the second half and then gambled by introducing both Mark Viduka and Martins in a double substitution in the 61st. That made it three strikers with Michael Owen already on the field.
Martins had a chance to equalize with three minutes left when he collected a through ball but shot high and wide from only five meters (yards) under pressure from two Spurs defenders.
Robinho volleyed home a pass from Stephen Ireland in the eighth minute for Man City, and Nedum Onuoha made it 2-0 in the 21st. Chris Brunt scored twice as West Brom hit back to make it 2-2, but Elano scored a 56th-minute penalty and Daniel Sturridge added a fourth in injury time.
The loss left West Brom nine points away from safety with only five games to go.
