Defending champion Dempo edge past a fighting Vasco 2-1 to register their first win in the ONGC I-league played at Nehru stadium in Fatorda on Sunday.

Dempo scored both their goals through Roberto Silva(24th) and Ranty Martins(30th).

Dempo who lost to JCT in their first match have collected three points from two matches. While Vasco who suffered their second defeat have one point from three matches.

Vasco who showed lot of fighting qualities reduced the margin through the Uzbekistan striker Ravshan Teshabaev.

The win is a morale boost for Dempo who play their return match against Safa Club of Lebanon in the semi-finals of the AFC Cup on October 21.

Dempo made a impressive start as their midfield combined well with their strikers with quick short passes. Anthony Pereira who did lot of running on the right, troubled the rival defense with overhead crosses as Dempo kept Vasco under pressure for the first 30 minutes and could have taken early lead but Mboyo Iyomi who was off colour today and Ranty Martins failed to direct their header on target.

Martins came close to scoring in the 13th minute but his well directed shot was staved off by keeper Laxmikant Kattimani.

After these close shaves, Dempo finally made dent in the 24th minute when Roberto Silva headed a shot, after a combined move between Climax Lawerence and Anthony Pereira, with the latter sending a high cross for Roberto to do the rest from the right.

Martins who is going through a lean patch than increased the lead in the 30th minute when he tapped home a cross by Anthony Pereira.

Vasco, who played a subdued game till then, came out of their shell and went offensive with their Uzbekistan foreigners giving good account of themselves especially striker Ravshan Teshabaev looking dangerous when found inside the box.

Ravshan who saw his 40-yards shot from the right hitting the cross bar than reduced the margin in the 32nd minute.

Medio Menino Fernandes from the middle played a forward pass to Ravshan which defender John Dias failed to clear as the ball deflected his leg and found the feet of Ravshan who controlled the ball and send a deft placement to find the far post.

Dempo coach Armando Colaco, who did not want to risk his trump card Roberto Silva from injury after he had a fall while going for an aerial ball, replaced him with Nascimento Silveira at the stroke of the first half and Dempo midfield lost its sting to carry out raids in the second half.

Vasco looked more purposeful in their attack, had a good chance to equalise in the 58th minute when Fernandes curling shot was put out by Dempo's keeper Satish Kumar after he received a short pass from Lalnun Puia following a corner.

Dempo made a counter move and Mboyo Iyomi saw his shot saved by rival defender on the goal line and later substitute Clifton Gonsalves left-footer hit the left post.

Dempo's defender Sameer Naik was declared the man of the match.
