JCT downs defending champion Dempo 2-1

A resolute defending coupled by good keeping from Karanjit Singh helped JCT to down defending champion Dempo 2-1 in the ONGC I-League, played at Nehru stadium, Margao, here on Sunday.

Jct who let 1-0 at half time scored through Edward Silva (16th) and Balwant Singh (64th).

Dempo who dominated the entire game reduced the margin through substitute Nicolau Borges (78th).

JCT defender Anwar who played his heart out in the defense was declared the man of the match.

It was not Dempo's day even as they dominated the game especially in the second half creating several goal scoring chances but they either failed to find the mark on target or could not get past Karanjit Singh who brought off some smart saves to deny Dempo victory.

Defending champion, Dempo started in right earnest probing into the rival half mostly from the left, could have taken an early lead in the 4th minute when Ranty Martins who was found open into the box drove the ball out from close off a pass from Robeto da Silva.

Minute later Anthony Fernandes drove the ball straight into the hands of keeper Karanjit Singh.

Dempo who kept on keeping the defense on tight lease came close to taking the lead in the 15th minute. Robeto Silva who combined well with the upfront received a pass from Valeriano Rebello in the middle, sprinted into the box and let go a left footer which missed the target narrowly.

JCT mostly defending the citadel made a counter move and scored in the 16th minute. Daljit Singh worked his way on the right, send a lob to Edward de Silva into the box who chested the ball before uncorking a low shot that found the far corner of the net.

Dempo made two changes in the second half bringing in Satish Kumar in place of injured Abhijit Mondal and Nicolau Borges in place off colour Clifford Miranda, continue to raid into.

The rival half in search of the elusive goal and missed a chance in the 52nd minute when Climax Lawerence bi-cycle kick hit the bar after brushing leaping keeper Karanjit Singh.

With the entire team moving forward in search of the goal, Dempo's defense was left exposed and JCT punished them scoring their second goal in the 78th minute.

Baljit Sahni from the right send a forward to unmarked Balwant Singh who raced into the box and seeing keeper Satish Kumar leaving his charge send a deft placement into the net.

Dempo continued to pressed hard for a come and camped into the rival box for the entire last corner of the match, reduced the margin after missing several chances in the 78th minute.

Roberto who played well in the midfield send a cross to substitute Nicolau Borges into the box who controlled the ball before sending a low drive past keeper Karanjit Singh.

Thereafter, Dempo made all out effort to find the equalizer but the rival defense and keeper stood the ground firm to deny the equalizer.
