New York:

The New York Jets clinched a playoff berth by beating the visiting Oakland Raiders 23-3 on Sunday (December 31), completing a remarkable turnaround for the Jets who had gone only 4-12 last season. In the game, the Jets never trailed and scored 10 points from two Raiders turnovers, confirming Oakland's dubious status as the league leader in turnovers this season. Quarterback Chad Pennington threw for a score and rookie running back Leon Washington ran in another for the Jets. The Raiders finished the season losing all 8 of their games on the road, a franchise high 14 defeats and a dismal overall record of 2-14. With Detroit's win over Dallas, Oakland will get the 1st overall pick in next April's NFL draft and it looks like they'll need it. Giants Stadium is the second largest arena in the NFL and is the home for both the New York Giants and New York Jets and both will be in the playoffs this season after the Jets beat the Oakland Raiders 23-3. The Raiders' struggling offense had their problems all game. Faced with a 3rd down play on their own 40-yard line, quarterback Aaron Brooks hit receiver Johnnie Morant on a slant pattern. However, Morant fumbled the ball when he was hit by Jets defensive back, David Barrett - defensive back Hank Poteat recovered to set up a scoring position for the home side at the Raiders 40 yard line, just 6 minutes into the game. On their ensuing drive, the Jets cashed in on the turnover. Jets quarterback, Chad Pennington connected with tight end Chris Baker on a 1 yard touchdown pass to put the Jet on top 7-0 in the 1st quarter. It was Pennington's 17th touchdown pass of the season. Coming off consecutive rotator cuff operations on his shoulder in the last 2 seasons, Pennington completed 22 of 30 passes for 157 yards to go along with this TD toss. With the Jets ahead 10-3, running back Leon Washington took a pitch from Pennington, broke a couple of tackles and dove into the endzone to increase the Jets lead to 20-3 early in the 4th quarter. The 15 yard score was the rookie out of Florida State's 4th rushing touchdown of the season. On the Raiders first play from scrimmage following the score, Jets linebacker Eric Barton came in on a blitz and knocked the ball loose from Brooks. Jets defensive end Bobby Hamilton recovered the fumble at the Raiders 23 yard line. The Raiders' 2nd turnover of the game led to a 35-yard field goal by Jets kicker Mike Nugent and gave the Jets a 23-3 lead. The Jets coasted the rest of the way to a victory by the same score and booked a Wild Card berth in the NFL playoffs beginning next weekend. With the clock running out in the game and on the Raiders, Pennington celebrated the win by spinning around and pointing a finger towards the sky to signify his team was number one on the day - they'll face much stiffer tests in the post season.
