Chelsea striker Didier Drogba had a knee operation on Saturday.

Chelsea said in a statement that the procedure went well and Drogba's rehabilitation would begin as soon as possible. The club did not reveal the exact injury or give a timescale for his recovery.

"Didier's knee locked yesterday afternoon and the decision was taken to have the operation immediately in the medical interests of the player," Chelsea doctor Bryan English said.

Chelsea manager Avram Grant said he would know more about Drogba's recovery time within the next three days.

"The future is not easy without Drogba but I didn't come to this club for an easy life," Grant said. "He had a problem with his knee, we waited a few days and then he knocked it again last night. He needed the operation and there was nothing we could do about it."

It's unclear if Drogba will be available to play for Ivory Coast in the African Cup of Nations, which runs Jan. 20-Feb. 2 in Ghana. Drogba has played 15 times for Chelsea this season and scored nine goals.

"Are we losing him to the African Nations Cup? We want him to be well," Grant said. "If his knee is OK and he plays in the competition then good, but if he can also play for Chelsea then that is also good.

"What's important now is that he feels good."
