Chelsea manager Avram Grant was assessing the health of influential captain John Terry on Tuesday, before deciding whether the centre-half will be able to play in Wednesday's Champions League clash at Valencia.

Terry underwent surgery on Sunday after suffering a broken cheekbone during Saturday's Premier League draw with Fulham and is the chief injury doubt ahead of the crucial Group B encounter in Spain.

The England captain took part in training at Valencia's Mestalla stadium on Tuesday wearing a face mask, but Chelsea will wait before making a final decision on whether their skipper will be fit to play.

It looks likely Terry will play but Valencia coach Quique Sanchez Flores will also draw strength from the fact that Chelsea are no longer under the guidance of Jose Mourinho, who led the club to two Champions League semi-finals and two domestic league titles during his three years at the helm.

The Portuguese coach left Stamford Bridge last month and his replacement, Avram Grant, has had a mixed start to life in the job with one win, one draw and one defeat from his three games in charge while Valencia go into the game on the back of seven successive wins in all competitions.
