Fluminense appoints Gama as new coach

Brazilian side Fluminense have finally appointed a new coach. After turning down six applicants in less than a week, they've given the job permanently to caretaker coach Alexandre Gama. Fluminense, one of the oldest teams in Brazil, are currently the top ranked team from Rio de Janeiro in the Brazilian Championship. They are placed 14th out of 24. Gama is Fluminense's third coach this year. His predecessors, former Brazil and Paris Saint-German defender Ricardo Gomes and Valdir Espinosa, struggled to maintain discipline over a squad including the so-called "bad boys" Romario and Edmundo. With 101 years of history, Fluminense start the second phase of the Brazilian Championship under a lot of pressure. (AP)
