London:
Bayer Leverkusen, losing finalists to Real Madrid in 2002, hammered the Spaniards 3-0, in the most stunning upset in the Champions League. In Rome, a match between Roma and Dynamo Kiev was abandoned with Dynamo leading 1-0 after Swedish referee Anders Frisk was injured. He was hit in the head by an object thrown from the stands as he left the field at halftime. Frisk was helped off the pitch with blood streaming down his forehead and face. Set to forfeit? At the end of the first half, Frisk red-carded French defender Philippe Mexes for pushing down a Dynamo defender. Dynamo led at the time 1-0 on a goal in the 28th by Goran Gavrancic. UEFA was to decide in the next few days whether to complete the match or award a forfeit. Other contenders Other big-name European clubs fared better than Real Madrid yesterday in the continent's No. 1 competition. Four-time champion Liverpool defeated last season's finalist Monaco 2-0 on goals by Djibril Cisse and Milan Baros. Fellow English side Manchester United rallied from a 2-0-halftime deficit to draw Lyon 2-2 on two goals from Ruud van Nistelrooy. In Leverkusen's stunning upset in Group B, midfielder Jacek Krzynowek put the Germans ahead in the 39th, Franca scored in the 50th and Dimitar Berbatov completed the Group B victory in the 55th. It was Leverkusen's first win over Real in six Champions League matches. It previously lost four, including the 2002 final, when Real won 2-1 to clinch its last title. Roma and Dynamo are the other contenders in Group B.(AP)Topics mentioned in this article
