Rotterdam, Netherlands:
Ruud Gullit got the perfect start as new coach of Feyenoord as the Rotterdam outfit destroyed De Graafschap 6-1 in their opening Eredivisie encounter. It took only ten minutes for striker Dirk Kuijt to breach the defence of newly promoted De Graafschap, latching onto the end of Romeo Castelen's looping cross. Kuijt's second was just as simple, standing in the right place to nod home after Hossam Ghaly had done well to keep the ball in play. The visitors had to soak up plenty of first half pressure, but grabbed a goal on the stroke of half time. Superior side However, it did not take long for the home side to reassert their superiority. Just six minutes after the restart Kuijt completed his hat trick by converting Karim Saidi's centre. Kuijt then turned provider, hanging the ball into the centre for Castelen to add the fourth with a karate-style kick past Aleksander Klak. Castelen was revelling in a midfield role and grabbed a fifth on the hour mark. Taking advantage of some hesitant defending on the edge of the Graafschap box, the new signing from Den Haag found the back of the net to mark an impressive debut. The rout was completed seventeen minutes from the end, when Salomon Kalou's side footed shot could only be palmed into the corner of the net by goalkeeper Klak. Gullit could barely have dreamed of a better scoreline in his first game in charge - 6-1 a fair reflection of his side's overwhelming dominance. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
