Bremen:
Bundelsiga champions Werder Bremen left it late to beat Schalke 04 1-0 in the opening match of the new season. Substitute Nelson Valdez got the winner in the 83rd minute The 2004-05 season in Germany's Bundesliga got off to a slow start when kick-off in the opening game was delayed because of a power shortage in the stadium of champions Werder Bremen. The problem was caused by building works near the stadium. The first half wasn't really worth the wait either. Werder fans saw their team come close to scoring an own goal in what proved to be an uninspiring 45 minutes. The other moment of any note came on the stroke of half time when Werder's Tim Borowski turned, but shot wide. The only goal of the match came in the 83rd minute when substitute Nelson Valdez stole in unmarked at the far post to toe poke the ball home. It was the Paraguayan's sixth goal for Werder and one to give his team a confidence boosting victory in the first game of the season. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
