The 29-year-old Brazilian player was without a club since leaving Mexico's Pumas last month. He previously played in Mexico for San Luis, Atlas and Leon. He also played for Italy's Bari and Brazil's Paulista and Bragantino.
Contract details were not immediately disclosed, but Corinthians said on Tuesday it has an option to extend the player's contract for another year.
Ailton, who trained with his new club on Tuesday, will replace Willian, who last week transferred to Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk.
Corinthians, national champion in 1990, 1998, 1999 and 2000, is 12th in the 20-team Brazilian league standings with 27 points from 20 games.
The team's next match is on Wednesday against Botafogo in the Brazilian stage of the Copa Sudamericana.
