The big match of the sixth round in the German Bundesliga on Saturday saw Bayer Leverkusen travel to Stuttgart, to take on Herbert Briem's in-form side. And as early as the eighth minute, they ought to have been a goal down - Stuttgart's Brazilian striker Cacau hit a post and almost converted the rebound. Four minutes later, they made the breakthrough from another rebound, this time as a result of Horst Heldt's curling free kick. The ball fell to Stuttgart defender Philipp Lahm and his shot sneaked inside Hans-Jorg Butt's right hand post. The home side added a second three minutes before half time. Heldt's testing corner was turned in from a narrow angle by Austrian defender Martin Stranzl to make it 2-0. The expected comeback from a team that had already beaten Real Madrid in the Champions' League this season failed to materialise and Stuttgart added a third in second half stoppage time. Aleksander Hleb was brought down by Leverkusen's Andrey Voronin and Silvio Meissner put away the spot kick with minimum fuss. Stuttgart remain second in the table, a point behind leaders VfL Wolfsburg, while Leverkusen, without a win in their last three league matches, slip to sixth. (AP)
