Greece are the new champions of Euro 2004. In a dramatic final watched by millions around the world, the team described as the underdogs throughout the tournament beat hosts Portugal 1-0 to clinch its first major trophy. Angelos Charisteas headed the only goal in the 57th minute as Greece achieved one of the greatest all time shocks in soccer on Sunday. Remarkable run The Greeks had never won a game at a major championship before arriving at Euro 2004 but ended up twice beating the Portuguese, ousting defending champion France 1-0 in the quarterfinal and then beating hot favorite Czech Republic 1-0 in the semis. Sunday's result meant that Portuguese coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, who guided Brazil to its fifth World Cup triumph two years ago, failed to become the first man to win the world and European titles with two different teams. Portugal, though, had only themselves to blame for not lifting the title, wasting numerous chances even though they had nearly 55 percent of the possession. Celebration time But the night clearly belonged to the Greeks, who were 100-1 outsiders to lift the title. But they upset the formbook and the odds to be crowned European Champions. And its been a non stop celebration in Greece, where millions of fans have been partying on the streets. Fans gathered in the capital Athens, waving flags and singing the national anthem.
