London:
England's provisional squad for Euro 2004 was announced in London on Monday. The main area of interest - central defence where injury and suspension has wiped out several key contenders. "Yes, I would say so because we are missing Rio Ferdinand of course. (Gareth) Southgate is not fit in this moment. So, that was difficult yes, of course," said Sven-Goran Eriksson, England coach. Backing up the experienced and impressive duo of Sol Campbell of Arsenal and Chelsea's John Terry - Liverpool's Jamie Carragher and Ledley King of Tottenham Hotspur. Asked whether he thought the latter pairing had enough experience if called upon to play in Euro 2004, Eriksson didn't sound wholly convincing. "Well, that is a good question and the answer will come if they are going to play in Portugal and we will know it then. Ledley King is young, a young man. But I think that he has been playing very well especially at centre-half. Carragher is doing very well for Liverpool in this moment at that position. So, I think the are okay - both of them," he added. 'Superstar problems' And what of his superstars - especially one troubled midfield maestro. David Beckham has had a hard time recently - admittedly much of it down to his own making. His not-so-private life has dominated the tabloid headlines recently while his performances on the pitch have been less than scintillating - culminating in Sunday night's red card for verbally abusing a linesman while playing for Real Madrid. So no Alan Smith of Leeds in attack, no rising Tottenham star Jermain Defoe, no Scott Parker of Chelsea. A safe selection. Eriksson names his final squad on June the 2nd - don't expect any changes - unless further injuries intervene.Topics mentioned in this article
