Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been ruled out for the rest of the 2013-14 English Premier League season due to a chipped bone in his toe, according to the Daily Star. This could come as a major blow for embattled manager David Moyes who has failed miserably this season after replacing legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson following his retirement.
The injury is far more serious for Rooney, who recently signed a new 300,000-pound-a-week deal with United, than how it was initially projected by the Old Trafford club.
Although United have only five matches left this season in the Premier League, Moyes would have loved Rooney on board, with the team struggling to book a Europa league spot this year. They were ousted from the Champions League by defending champions Bayern Munich recently, after they put up a spirited show in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford during the first leg. Rooney would also have helped build the necessary momentum for the club in their next season.
However, even as doctors remain hopeful, the big question for English football fans is whether Rooney will be available to play for the Three Lions in the 2014 Brazil World Cup in June.
