Valencia won the Spanish league title for the second time in three seasons on Sunday after beating Sevilla 2-0 in Andalucia. Spain midfielders Vicente Rodriguez and Ruben Baraja scored to give Valencia an unassailable seven-point lead over Real Madrid with two rounds of La Liga season remaining. After watching the game on TV, thousands of happy supporters gathered outside the club's Mestalla Stadium, while fans in cars waved flags and sounded horns in central Valencia. Valencia's triumph, the sixth in the club's history, came after defending champions Real Madrid slumped dramatically by losing four of their last five games. A delighted Valencia fan referred to the contrast between the two teams - although he did not actually pronounce the words "Real Madrid" - when asked why his club had won the title. "More than anything we have a team, a good team, not individual stars, they are not 'galacticos' (superstars), they each not what they have to do, their role. Yes, we have a team and we deserve the success. And now we're going for the UEFA Cup also," said a Valencia supporter. Another fan was less eloquent but no less delighted when asked for his reaction. "This is unbelievable, this is ecstacy - these are the best supporters in the whole world!" said another supporter. So now with the title confirmed, Valencia will be hoping to make it a double with victory in the upcoming UEFA Cup final against Marseille. They'll no doubt be hoping to emulate Portugal's Porto who won their domestic title and the UEFA Cup last season - and now find themselves in the final of Europe's top club competition, the Champions League. These happy Valencia fans will be even more delighted, if that's possible, should their side go all the way next year. (AP)
