European champions Liverpool carried a healthy 3-0 lead into the second leg of their UEFA Champions League first round qualifying tie with TNS. The Reds increased their aggregate lead in the 26th minute when lone striker Djibril Cisse displayed great poise to control John Arne Riise's cross from the left and find the target from 12-yards out. TNS would show great resilience to deny Liverpool further goals before half time though. Gerard Doherty would be particularly influential for the Welsh champions and he denied Dietmar Hamann a 50th minute goal from the penalty spot after midfield Darren Potter had been fouled in the penalty area. TNS then enjoyed a spell of pressure that would see them go close to finding an equaliser. Steven Beck's 67th minute shot come back off the far goal post and John Toner fired the rebound over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy. TNS would find the target eight minutes later, but Marc Lloyd-Williams' strike was disallowed for offside. Liverpool were already headed for the second qualifying round of the Champions League, but their captain Steven Gerrard ensured a comfortable passage. Gerrard, who scored a hat-trick in the first leg of the tie, came off the bench and scored two goals in the space of a minute. He beat Doherty with a long range strike in the 85th minute and completed his brace with a powerful shot from inside the box. Liverpool advance to face Lithuania's Kaunas, who completed an 8-2 aggregate victory over HB Torshavn of the Faeroe Islands on Tuesday night. (AP)
