Bundesliga leaders Werder Bremen booked their place in the final of the German National Cup on Tuesday, but had to comeback from 2-1 down in extra time before beating second division side VfB Luebeck 3-2. A Mladen Krstajic own goal was cancelled out by Werder's Johan Micoud, but Ferydoon Zandi restored the visitors' lead in the first period of extra time. Luebeck faced a sustained spell of pressure in the second period of extra time though and Ailton levelled the score before Haedo Valdez grabbed the winning goal. The home side fell behind in the 11th minute when Mladen Krstajic headed a Luebeck corner kick into his own goal. Werder pulled level in the 54th minute of the match though - Johan Micoud with a deft header to equalise. The match remained tied after 90 minutes and went into extra time, where Luebeck reclaimed their lead through Ferydoon Zandi with the help of a slight deflection from Krstajic. The visitors then invited pressure from Werder in the second period of extra time and it seemed only a matter of time before the home side levelled matters. Brazilian Ailton grabbed his third goal of the competition in the 111th minute, curling in a fine shot from the edge of the Luebeck penalty area. That goal was a bitter pill to swallow for the Luebeck defence and they were still ruing their misfortune when Haedo Valdez scored the winner three minutes later. The Paraguayan appeared to handle the ball just outside of the box, but Luebeck's claims fell on deaf ears and Valdez fired in on the half volley to book Werder's place in the final. They advance to face the winner of Wednesday's second semi-final between Borussia Moenchengladbach and Alemannia Aachen. (AP)
