Fulham scored twice in 10 minutes to defeat beleaguered Leeds United 2-0 in the English Premier League match at Loftus Road in London. After a tepid first half with barely a couple of chances, the Cottagers pulled ahead halfway through the second with a opportunistic goal from Sean Davis. As Fulham began to dominate the game and Leeds pushed players forward to counter-attack in search of an equalizer, Boa Morte scored Fulham's second goal, the score puts Fulham in eighth place behind Liverpool but bottom-placed Leeds move nowhere in their battle against relegation. The tragic loss of life in Madrid has forced everyone to reflect and Loftus Road was no exception. Players and fans observed a minute's silence to show respect for those 200 people who lost their lives in the train bomb atrocity. When the match did kick-off, the soccer on offer was a poor advert for the English Premier League. Leeds created the game's first real attack, with Mark Viduka's clever pass setting up Jermaine Pennant to cross just beyond Smith at the far post. Fulham had a far clearer opening midway through the half - Barry Hayles setting up Luis Boa Morte but it was wasted. Sylvian Legwinksi then set up another first half chance in the 41st minute, his long cross finding Boa Morte in space. Man-of-the-match Boa Morte nonetheless shot lamely into the arms of Paul Robinson to miss the best chance of the half. In the second half the first goal finally arrived, Fulham's Sean Davis skillfully blasting home the opening goal after 70 minutes. The midfielder played a neat one-two with Steed Malbranque and hammered a 16-metre strike into the bottom left corner. As Leeds pushed their men upfield in desperate search of an equaliser, Fulham doubled their lead. Mark Pembridge returned a half-cleared free-kick into the Leeds box which found Zat Knight who floated the ball across the goalmouth for Boa Morte to head past Paul Robinson. Leeds wasted late chances to draw level, substitute Simon Johnson beating van der Sar but hitting the bar to deprive Leeds a consolation goal in the last minute of the game. The win consolidates a mid-table position for Fulham, but pushes cash-strapped and rock-bottom Leeds further towards a relegation dogfight. (AP)
