Olympique Lyon began their quest for a seventh successive French Ligue 1 title with a home clash against Auxerre at the Stade Gerland on Sunday.

'Les Gones' are once again favourites to be top of the standings come next May.

But although Auxerre only managed to scrape an eighth-placed finish last season, they nearly took the lead when Benoit Pedretti's free-kick was fumbled on to the post and behind by Remi Vercoutre after 12 minutes.

However, Lyon should have taken the lead two minutes later when Kim Kallstrom's pass released Abdur Kader Keita and his pinpoint low cross evaded everyone until Sidney Govou blasted over an open goal at the far post.

The breakthrough came after 33 minutes. Jeremy Toulalan's clever pass releasing Milan Baros and the Czech striker lifted the ball over Olivier Sorin for the opening goal.

That lead was doubled after 70 minutes when Auxerre defender Jean-Pascal Mignot passed straight to Kallstrom who released Govou, he then fed Karim Benzema whose fierce drive flashed past Sorin.

Great goal by the 19-year-old, two-nil to Lyon and the campaign for a seventh title in a row is up-and-running.
